‘People just dae wit they can tae get by’: Exploring the half-life of deindustrialisation in a Scottish community

This article practically applies Sherry-Lee Linkon’s ‘half-life of deindustrialisation’ thesis in examining a deindustrialising Scottish community. Linkon contends that, while the most visibly toxic impacts deindustrialisation have dissipated over time, its lingering effects continue to cause harm more subtle ways. Utilising qualitative research from national study on community organised crime, I consider ways which long-term legacies and disinvestment manifest lived experiences residents Tunbrooke (pseudonym). assess three areas where half-life can be observed Tunbrooke: physical environment; poverty, addiction mental ill-health; external stigmatisation. argue for those living Tunbrooke, these processes shape their day-to-day lives, along with omnipresent threat posed by crime regular episodes violence. However, rather than passively accepting this, there is opposition view locality as ‘a violent shithole’, an emphasis kinship solidarity through adversity. that responses are framed lasting communal working-class identity, has been strengthened area experienced fallout recent political austerity.
